Maybe a lot of people don’t know, but around my early 20s I went to college fashion! When asked what is the best way to start learning about the subject, I always answer: study the history and the big names. So I separated 10 stylists that you can’t help but know, to understand, learn and be inspired more and more.
Ten names are nowhere near the amount of people we can be inspired by – they are many big names. Still, this is a good number to understand references and historical contexts, and to realize that there are very important movements that deserve a lot of attention. Now, we live in a moment of fashion concerned with social, environmental and other positions. But, there have been many other contexts – after all, there are people on this list that were born two centuries ago and that continue to be relevant. Enjoy, have fun and write down all the inspirations!
IMPORTANT TIP: note that all the photos are from 2020 shows, that is, even after so long, brands carry a lot of their history. To see more photos, below them has the link to the complete collection!
Guccio Gucci takes the name of its Italian brand, Gucci, founded in 1921, as a leather goods company and a small luggage store in Florence. Before that, the designer left Italy to visit Paris and London, where he can understand about the sophistication and culture of the cities – which served as inspiration for his creations.
The brand and the stylist have a lot of history! But, two major highlights are the bag with bamboo handle and the double G logo applied to the pieces. Ah, all of this in the late 1940s 🙂 Today the brand is run by tom Ford, which, in addition to reviving many signs of the brand, created the Horsebit Clutch Bag, which everyone in Hollywood uses today.
From a country town of just 1500 inhabitants to the world, Vivienne Westwood, English, even started a fashion course but thought she had no talent and left, can you believe it? After becoming a primary teacher and some marriages, she conquered her space and today is a reference in punk fashion and – always – launches many trends.
She also included activist movements in her creations and brought an engaged fashion to our time. From the fight against terrorism to the fight for the environment. The pieces usually bring a lot of freedom and are loaded with black, red, tartar, chains, zippers…
What we know right away is that Chanel is a reference when we talk about class and fashion in France. But there is much more to it: Coco Chanel, the brand’s creator, was orphaned by her mother when she was six years old and, with four more siblings, lived in an orphanage for 4 years, reason for inspiration for the haute couture collection Paris Fashion Week 2020.
Coco Chanel worked as a clerk at a fabric store, where she learned to sew, in addition to singing in a cabaret, where she received the nickname Coco, due to the music Who saw coconut. Plus, after a lot of history, did you know that our basic black is Chanel’s influence? I Love!
Marc Jacobs is the stylist who made us love grunge! In the 1980s, the creator presented a collection based on the style of grunge rock bands of the time, such as Nirvana, for example. It’s leather, ripped jeans, flannel shirts, wider modeling …
Later, Jacobs assumed the position of artistic director of Louis Vuitton, in 1997, with the great challenge of joining its boldness to the brand. And of course, his entry made everything renewed, after all, he is the type of stylist who does not follow universal trends. Always good to have someone who goes out of the curve, right, loves?
Before Marc Jacobs, the French brand was run by Louis Vuitton himself. His legacy was mainly due to creating something extremely beautiful and useful: travel bags! People, back in 1854, needed something to load their personal belongings into the carriages – but, of course, it needed to be beautiful and up to par. So Louis Vuitton created super resistant bags, with waterproof and yet beautiful fabrics.
Of course, along with Louis, his heirs emerged. We are talking about Georges Vuitton, who together with his father, in 1885 opened the first store outside France and further revolutionized his father’s creation, with smart closures for bags: “true chests”, it says on the brand’s website .
Ah, the brand also produces several other pieces such as clothes, shoes… But, if you travel with a beautiful and surely perfect suitcase, Vuitton is all about it 🙂
Mario and Martino Prada
First of all: the Prada was once the official supplier of italian royal family!!! What’s more, Vogue Americana has already said that the brand’s show is the only reason for Milan Fashion Week. There are those who disagree, of course, but you can already see the importance, right?
It all started at the beginning of the last century, when two brothers founded the brand Prada Brothers. Everything was so majestic due to the exclusive design of the pieces, made of very few materials used, that made each creation unique. Even sea lion leather was already part of the materials used! Strange, but authentic for the time.
Today, the brand is run by Miuccia Prada, granddaughter of Mario Prada. The creation that has taken the most since then, even though it is a super innovative brand, is a very basic black bag, gee, it’s Prada!
In 1947, in France, Christian Dior presented his first collection, with much luxury and revolution. The creation was called Ligne Corolle, but everyone called it New Look. That’s because Carmel Snow, the writer for the American magazine Harper’s Bazarr, said: “This is a new look!” when he saw the creations.
The context of his creations was post-war. Thus, its concept for the time was to get rid of any kind of restrictions and bring a lot of luxury and extravagance: extremely luxurious, sophisticated models, with wide skirts and well-defined waists. And it continues today!
Gianni and Donatella Versace
Gianni Versace she learned to sew in the most genuine way possible, helping her mother in her sewing studio when she was younger. At 40, he was responsible for creating the brand with his surname and the commitment to bring a lot of boldness and sensuality, but with comfort and freedom. There is no way of not remembering the stylist’s creations without thinking about very flashy, colorful prints and a rock and roll feel too sometimes.
Unfortunately, the legacy had to be passed on to his sister Donatella Versace, after the stylist’s murder at the age of 50. Even so, the audacious and rock references still remain and remain incredible. Donatella left the geometric cutouts too 😉
Kate Spade, in 1991, she was then editor of Revista Mademoiselle, about fashion, fashion shows and clothes and was outraged by a very recurring creation: the classic handbag! Jokes aside, the stylist wanted to see bags with irreverent design, differences, other colors… But, she never found them! So he decided to create his own: the elephant bag. And several others too 🙂
In the beginning, the bags had a retro and very practical design, but with a lot of personality, and then they started more daring and quite fun proposals. Today, of course, the brand is dedicated to other creations besides bags, but always with the same light and lively footprint.
Jean Paul Gaultier
You know the bra look used by Madonna? Jean Paul Gaultier. You know that style look sailor? Jean Paul Gaultier. Oh, and the corset Poster? Too!!! They are great creations, very famous and all launched by the same stylist, who has the brand with his own name. Daring is at the top of your list and lives up to its nickname: terrible enfant, terrible child, in French.
The big event at Paris Fashion Week 2020 was the stylist’s farewell. After all, now, at the age of 50, he has announced his retirement. Its history is extremely important to remember how much it is necessary to break barriers and pre-established concepts. In the 1980s, for example, he left apparent lingerie and dressed skirts on men, causing a lot, but bringing good fruits of freedom.
Liked? Of course, there are only 10 references, inspirations, influencers … But, super valid and necessary to understand about fashion. And you, ready to be a reference too ?! 😅
