Austin’s best restaurants and bars

Austin's best restaurants and bars

After telling you about the interesting shops and tours around Austin, it’s time to give you tips on the best restaurants in town. Barbecue and tacos are some of the most common dishes there, especially if you prefer more local restaurants. Although they seem like two very common foods, the taste and preparation of the restaurants that I will talk about on the short list make all the difference!
In addition, the city’s nightlife is super busy. If you are over 21, be sure to add at least one or two bars in town to your itinerary. Most of them make great drinks and they offer a space for bands to play live. As I love music and this kind of place, I had a lot of fun getting to know some of the bars and would definitely go back to several of them.
NOTE: at the time we went there, I had not yet become a vegetarian and so I will also share with you my experiences with meat car

Moonshine Grill

The brick walls and wooden floors are characteristic of the Moonshine Grill. Paulo and I went there for dinner and we loved the place. The meats we ordered were delicious – tender and very well seasoned. Some of the dishes on the menu are made with fish and seafood, but we decided to try only red meat.
Among the options are jalapeño steak or pasta with green chilli, corn bisque, bacon and grilled chicken. On the menu they have only one vegetarian option, but you can ask for some changes in other dishes, as in the case of pasta with chilli.

Javelina

Javelina is the type of bar that pleases you as much as the environment as well as the food. They have a great snack menu, including some larger dishes like hamburgers and tacos. Ah, those who are vegetarian or vegan can ask for the vegetarian hamburger.
The atmosphere of the bar is super cool and the day we went we were lucky to see an amazing band playing there. Even if there is no live show when you go to Javelina, I am sure you will have fun and love the place!

Emmer & Rye

Emmer & Rye was one of the restaurants that Paulo and I loved most in Austin. His decor is very modern and their kitchen is open, something that is very interesting for those who like to see the preparation of the dishes.
Most of the ingredients used are seasonal, so everything is very fresh and carefully selected. For vegetarians, a good option is the shimeji carpaccio with capers and lemon aioli. For those who eat meat, the lamb belly prepared with tomato and cumin is an excellent alternative.

Buffalo Billiards

Another super typical bar in the city is Buffalo Billiards. They make great drinks and when we went the food was delicious. As in Javelina, we saw a very good live band – it is worth taking a stroll there.
The place also has pool tables and other games that are usually very crowded at night. If you like this kind of space, you will love to meet Buffalo Billiards. Nachos and quesadillas are perfect options to make the night even better.

The Continental Club

To go to The Continental Club is to find music for sure. The place is great to meet local bands and have delicious drinks. I just don’t recommend it highly for those who don’t like very crowded places – during SXSW it gets crowded! Eat at a restaurant before you go there, because then you will only worry about enjoying the drinks and enjoying the band that is playing that day 😉

Güero’s

Some say that Güero’s sells the best taco in town. I confess that I didn’t think they were that incredible, but they were really tasty and very well made. Part of the menu is made especially for vegetarians and vegans, so you will find tacos and burritos stuffed with vegetables.
The atmosphere of Güeros has a very hipster style, both inside and outside, where there are some outdoor tables. The dishes are well served and the drinks are great – a good option for lunch!

Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-BQ

Don’t leave Austin without going to Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-BQ. This restaurant is one of the best recommended in the city and is loved by tourists as well as residents of the region.
There you will find the typical American barbecue. The most requested cut of the place is what they call lean brisket. Another good alternative is smoked turkey 😉

Stella San Jac

Stella San Jac is known mainly for the huge hamburger they make. However, Paulo and I chose to eat a salmon and we couldn’t have made a better choice – he was just incredible.
Unlike other places on the list, Stella San Jac has a more refined decor, but it is still modern and authentic. It is a great place to eat more elaborate dishes that have greater creativity and variety within the menu.
