The vegetable banana is an exotic alternative to potatoes. Fried, baked or deep-fried, the tropical ingredient gives the dish an unusual touch.
The plantain is closely related to the sweet fruit banana – but it is inedible raw. It only develops its aroma when heated.
The fixed shell can be loosened with a knife by cutting it several times in the longitudinal direction and pulling it off. The Federal Center for Nutrition points this out.
Depending on the degree of ripeness, the plantain can be used for different dishes: A green-yellow fruit can be used like a potato, for example for stews and soups. It contains a lot of starch and is therefore also a good substitute for flour. A yellow plantain with black spots is ideal for frying, baking, cooking and deep-frying. If the plantain is black, it tastes sweeter and is particularly good for a dessert.
Consumers can find plantains in Asian shops, but also in well-stocked supermarkets – mostly next to potatoes or exotic fruits. You can leave the plantain to ripen a little at home in a dark place at room temperature.
