Flight over the Grand Canyon

Flight over the Grand Canyon

I think my first experience flying in a helicopter was quite remarkable, after all, it is not every day that you have the possibility to fly over one of the Seven Wonders of the World, right?
The Grand Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world and it is really impressive to see this magnitude up close. As we were in Las Vegas, which is very close to this marvel, we decided to take the tour.

We hired the company Papillon and a very positive point is that on the website you can see the scripts in detail in Portuguese. We chose the canyon landing tour, passing through some of the main points of the West Grand Canyon – the region closest to Vegas.
There is also the possibility of landing at the top and, it seems, this is also an excellent alternative. From up there you can visit some famous spots, such as Eagle and Guano Point and, if you want, you can still go to Skywalk, a 70-meter glass walkway over a canyon.
It is worth remembering that, in most cases, the price of the tour already includes transportation to and from the main hotels in Las Vegas and food + champagne on landing.

In addition to Papillon, there are a few more companies that offer the tour from Vegas like Maverick (website also in Portuguese) and Sundance. Regardless of your choice, be careful with the cheaper and shorter tours, because normally they do not include landing and then I think the experience is compromised, since the flyover over the canyon is very fast and most of the tour will be with the desert landscapes.

Well, talking about the tour itself, I think that despite the high price (more than 300 dollars per person), it is very worth it. It is a very unique experience and I would hardly have the time available on the trip to arrive by car and take a walk without flying over the place.

The landscapes are really breathtaking! For those who don’t know, the Grand Canyon was sculpted over millions of years by the Colorado River that cuts through the desert terrain. Constant erosion has created immense valleys that reach 1,800 meters deep. It’s really gigantic!

Despite the intense heat (be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and hats), this immensity has been inhabited for centuries by tribes like Hualapai and, one of the most isolated, Supai.

As you can see from the photos, we were delighted with the tour even though it was shorter than we thought. Take a look at the companies’ itineraries and, if you have the opportunity, be sure to take a few hours out of your day in Vegas to discover one of the wonders of the world 😉
