Fighting a cold with home remedies – quick self-help

Not every home remedy that our generation of grandparents swears by is really recommended. However, the following are actually helpful with a cold:

  • Inhaling with hot steam: You can also inhale without an inhaler. A bowl of hot water and a towel over your head will do. This is how you moisturize your airways. But be careful with children. There is a risk of burns here.

  • Spicy food: Horseradish, onions and garlic and, of course, chili peppers loosen phlegm and have a germicidal and anti-inflammatory effect. So that you can get rid of the cold faster, you can spice it up.

  • Chicken soup: Whether the good old chicken soup actually works against a cold has long been debated. Now US researchers have shown that it has anti-inflammatory effects. However, this only applies to soups you have prepared yourself, not to ready-made products.

  • Drink a lot: Drinking a lot helps if you have a cold – preferably water and herbal teas. So that the mucous membranes are not additionally irritated, neither too hot nor too cold should be drunk. Lukewarm tea is just the thing.

  • Hot bath: A warm bath is a very relaxing home remedy for a cold and has an immediate effect on the whole body. Make sure, however, that you don’t stay in the water for more than 15 minutes. Bath additives with essential oils increase the effect. If you have a fever, you should refrain from bathing in order to protect your body.

That being said, your body doesn’t need a lot of rest after a full-blown flu. The best way to cure a simple cold is to lie down in bed and calm down, so your immune system can best fight the cold.

You don’t feel like waiting until your cold slowly disappears? Professor Ron Eccles from the University of Cardiff UK has set up a daily schedule for this purpose, with which you get a mild runny nose under control in a day.

  • 7 o’clock: Take a hot shower to loosen the phlegm.

  • 8 o’clock: Breakfast with oatmeal, blueberries, apples, dark grapes, natural yogurt and nuts. Ideally, the ingredients are as fresh as possible. There is freshly squeezed orange juice to drink.

  • 10 O `clock: Thyme tea with honey strengthens the immune system.

  • 12 o’clock: A walk in the fresh air will perk you up.

  • 13 o’clock: The expert recommends chicken soup for lunch. Not out of the bag, but homemade with fresh soup chicken from the butcher.

  • 3pm: Treat yourself to another glass of orange juice and a cup of tea.

  • 6 pm: In the evening the spicy things come into play, here in the form of pan vegetables with curry, chilli, garlic and ginger. The same applies here: Use fresh ingredients as possible.

  • Before going to bed, prepare yourself a warm foot bath (37 degrees Celsius) in which you add three tablespoons of mustard flour. This stimulates the blood circulation and moves the cold on the skin.

If you can hold out this tip against colds, you have, according to the professor best chances of feeling a lot better the next morning – provided it is actually a slight cold. These home remedies will also help with a more severe cold, but recovery will always take longer.
