The Christmas markets are currently tempting us to feast with all sorts of delicacies. But don’t worry, there are also healthy foods on the Christmas market.

A healthy Christmas – that’s how it works

Lard pastries, candy floss, meter sausage and mulled wine – eating healthy at the Christmas market? You don’t think so? Sure it works! Just try it out and try the following foods at the Christmas market instead of the usual calorie bombs. After all, it doesn’t always have to be the fat bratwurst and the white flour bun to get in the Christmas spirit.

1. Schupfnudeln with sauerkraut instead of potato pancakes

They are crispy and tasty and unfortunately very greasy. We’re talking about potato pancakes. If you want to eat healthily around Christmas, you should stay away from it. Instead, choose potato noodles with sauerkraut. You can find this food at every Christmas market. It only has about half the calories and is also good for your immune system. Because sauerkraut contains a lot of vitamin C, as well as valuable potassium and iron.

2. Burgundy ham instead of bratwurst

You may find it hard to believe, but a portion of hearty sausage with “everything” – French fries, mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard – can quickly reach 1000 calories. Eating healthy looks different: Better to grab the burgundy ham roll if you feel like something hearty. 100 grams of this ham only has around 280 calories. Another healthy Christmas alternative is lean steak meat.

3. Chestnuts instead of roasted almonds

A healthy Christmas is really easy, with hot chestnuts. You can find them at every Christmas market and they are the epitome of winter and romance. Chestnuts are not only delicious, they are also a real vitamin bomb: In addition to healthy fatty acids, they have potassium, B vitamins, manganese and copper. Sure, nuts and almonds are also healthy, but they are significantly more fat, i.e. richer in calories. And under the thick layer of sugar, the healthy aspect also goes quickly.

4. Corn on the cob instead of fries

You can also eat healthy at the Christmas market with a salted corn on the cob. It only has a little over 100 calories. You can even treat yourself to a piece of herb butter on top.

5. Crêpe with applesauce instead of Nutella

One of the most popular Christmas market dishes is certainly a sweet crepe. But be careful: stay away from the high-fat chocolate cream. Better to go for applesauce. This is much healthier and on top of that it contains next to no fat. So you can snack in between meals with a clear conscience.

6. Chocolate berries instead of lard biscuits

Do you love sweets? Then you’ve come to the right place at the Christmas market. And between all the sinful feasts, you can even find healthy dishes here: namely chocolate berries. The extra portion of vitamins and minerals in the berries quickly compensates for the little chocolate. Admittedly, greasy baked goods smell and taste very delicious, but for the sake of your health, leave it aside.

7. Apple cider instead of mulled wine

Mulled wine is a real fattening food. It’s made from red wine, sugar, and spices, and it really enjoys slapping your hips. Likewise Lumumba, Feuerzangenbowle and eggnog. But Christmas without an alcoholic hot drink? It’s hard to imagine. For those who like to have it healthy at Christmas, there is an alternative: cider. Although it contains less alcohol than mulled wine and the like, it tastes just as Christmassy and makes you nice and warm.

Snacking and feasting are allowed – even around Christmas. When you visit the Christmas market, just pay more attention to which dishes you choose from now on. Bring a little more vegetables to the table at home for the next few days, this will quickly make up for small “sins”. As a snack between meals, it is best to use fruit. This means that healthy eating around Christmas is no longer rocket science.
