Menopause can throw even the strongest woman off course. Fortunately, nature has some herbs in store that can help us through menopause, effectively relieve physical and psychological symptoms, and yet not cause the side effects that some powders from the drug industry can have. Left through menopause? Of course it works: hot flashes, irritability, palpitations – there is a herb against everything!
They are better known as a cure for digestive problems. But their mild bitter substances probably also have a stimulating effect on the region of the brain that is responsible for hormone regulation, the pituitary gland. That makes Angelica a good remedy for women.
Help by: irregular bleeding at the beginning of menopause, cycle-related headache and pelvic pain, loss of libido.
Application tip: Mix 50 g angelica root, 30 g damiana herb, 20 g dead nettle flowers. Pour 200 ml of hot, but no longer boiling, water over 1 teaspoon. Let it steep for 7 to 10 minutes, then strain. Drink 1 cup daily for 4 to 6 weeks.
The classic among the phyto sleep aids soothes the chaos in the head thanks to two of its natural substances – valeric acids and lignans. The combination also soothes nerves and relaxes muscles.
Help by: When the hormonal change leads to inner restlessness and nervous-related problems falling asleep.
Application tip: It is best to take a high-dose valerian extract preparation with 600 mg in the early evening and again before bed. The effect of valerian is enhanced in combination with hops and lemon balm. Good to know: There is no need to worry about addiction or habituation even after taking it for several months.
As estrogen levels drop during menopause, the urethral lining becomes more sensitive and thinner. Then it is easy for bacteria to establish themselves in the urinary tract.
Help by: Cystitis, thanks to the active ingredient arbutin. Application tip: Drink a tea made from bearberry herb 3 to 5 times a day. But it tastes very bitter. The more pleasant alternative is to take bearberry leaf extract (e.g. “Cystinol acute”).
Important: Drink at least 2 liters of water a day so that the urinary tract is flushed well
The Aztecs and Mayans used the leaves and flowers of the plant as an aphrodisiac and anti-stress agent. Their sexually stimulating and slightly euphoric effect is u. a. attributed to essential oils, bitter substances, flavonoids and tannins.
Help by: Listlessness in the climacteric and relieves depressive moods, exhaustion and nervous complaints.
Application tip: If you have a libido disorder, pour 1 handful of leaves, a little brown sugar, 2 to 3 dried chilies with 1 liter of good red wine, covered, and leave to stand for 1 week. Strain off and enjoy together with your partner. Damiana rebuilds itself as a homeopathic remedy (e.g. “Manuia”) in the event of irritation and exhaustion.
Early in the morning, drops of dew shine like little pearls on its green leaves. In the Middle Ages, alchemists tried to make life-extending elixirs from this water. However, it is the tannins in the herb that are actually medically effective.
Help by: Abdominal discomfort. The universal medicinal plant for women regulates u. a. the cycle as well as the bleeding rate and relieves menstrual cramps, which sometimes become more severe during menopause. In addition, lady’s mantle is supposed to support the psyche in accepting menopause.
Application tip: Drink 1 cup of lady’s mantle tea 3 times a day – ideally as a cure for 2 to 3 months. To do this, pour 150 ml of hot, but no longer boiling, water over 1 teaspoon herb. Cover and let stand for 10 minutes, strain
It blooms bright yellow on roadsides until September. Their herb, which contains flavonoids, saponins, and diuretic phenylglycosides, is used for therapeutic purposes.
Help by: Irritable bladder and chronic or recurring urinary tract diseases during menopause. It also drains the tissue. Because the extracts of the herb have an antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and flushing effect.
Application tip: For a healing tea, mix 60 g goldenrod, 25 g horsetail, 20 g earth smoke and 15 g nettle. Pour 200 ml of hot water over 2 heaped teaspoons, cover and let stand for 12 minutes, strain – 3 to 4 cups a day. Also drink at least two liters of water.
Many people get tired from drinking beer. This is mainly due to the hops in the drink.
Help by: The combination of bitter substances, phenolic acids and essential oils in the hop cones improves sleep disorders, restlessness and anxiety. In addition, hops have a slightly estrogen-like effect and thus also cushions typical menopausal symptoms.
Application tip: Preparations that combine hops and valerian show the most effective effect.
It blooms in mid-June, around St. John’s Day – hence the name of the plant. St. John’s wort is one of the scientifically very well researched phytotherapeutic agents.
Help by: mild to moderate depression. The secondary plant pigment Hyperforin ensures the mood-enhancing effect. The latest research suggests that St. John’s wort together with Greek mountain tea even prevents dementia.
Application tip: If the hormonal change causes depressive moods, take 900 mg St. John’s wort extract daily. It takes 2 to 3 weeks for the effects to be felt. Continue the therapy for at least 8 to 10 weeks, better 6 to 12 months, to prevent further depression.
If the fragrant, purple plant is to have a medicinal effect, you have to use the narrow-leaved medicinal lavender (real lavender).
Help by: Problems falling asleep and nervous anxiety states, because its ingredients linalool and linalyl acetate improve the stimulus filter function of the nervous system.
Application tip: 1 capsule daily with medicinal lavender oil (eg “Lasea”) can reduce anxiety after 3 to 4 days and improve sleep after 4 to 6 weeks. Even when used over several months, there are no side effects or habituation effects to be feared.
The hot fruits were used as a pepper substitute in the Middle Ages. Nuns and monks believed that they inhibited the sex drive.
Help by: irregular cycle – around the onset of menopause. Also relieves breast tenderness. Because monk’s pepper is thanks to its ingredients – these are z. B. Color and bitter substances as well as essential oils – a phytoestrogen.
Application tip: For a regular cycle, take a monk’s pepper supplement for 3 months.
The purple blooming medicinal plant comes from the rainforests of Brazil and is used there for medicine for the indigenous people. In addition to essential oil, flavonoids and the aromatic substance coumarin were detected in it.
Help by: nervous complaints such as mood swings, restlessness and irritability. Your plus: Passionflower calms you down without making you tired during the day.
Application tip: Drink passion flower tea 3 times a day. To do this, pour 1 teaspoon of dried cabbage with 150 ml of boiling water, cover and leave for 10 minutes. Alternatively, take passion flower extract (e.g. “Pascoflair”). This is possible for months without any habituation effects occurring.
The name of the plant is derived from the scent of its rhizome. It smells of roses when you cut it.
Help by: all stress symptoms, e.g. B. Exhaustion. Because rose root is an adaptogenic plant. It increases the natural resistance of the nerves.
Application tip: Rose root is taken as an extract (e.g. “Rhodiolan”). The effect can be felt after approx. 2 weeks. The product is well tolerated and can be taken for months.
It grows in almost every meadow with us. The medicinal effect is in the flowers of the red clover.
Help by: It is mainly the isoflavones of the plant that have an estrogenic effect. This allows the arable crop to balance the female hormone level and alleviate typical menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, mood swings and nervousness.
Application tip: Drink 3 to 5 cups of red clover tea daily. Many women benefit from the combination of black cohosh and red clover. The extract is available as a dietary supplement. Caution is advised with estrogen-dependent tumors. In this case, consult a doctor before taking.
The knotweed plant has been used as a medicinal plant in Asia for more than 4000 years. It has z. B. in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) proven.
Help by: Hot flashes, insomnia, depressive moods and anxiety. This can be explained by so-called hydroxystilbenes in the roots of the Siberian rhubarb. They activate certain estrogen receptors in humans, but without the side effects of hormone replacement therapy.
Application tip: The finished extract (e.g. “femiLoges”) should be taken once a day, always at the same time. Most women show a significant improvement in symptoms after 4 weeks. Make a discharge attempt after approx. 3 years. If the symptoms recur, take another year, then pause again.
Their inflorescences, up to two meters high, actually look like silver-white candles in the green of the leaves.
Help by: Hot flashes, sweats, palpitations, and difficulty sleeping. The ingredients, e.g. B. Actein and Cimicifugosid, are hormone-free, but still have an estrogen-like effect and thus a calming and regulating influence on the organism.
Application tip: Take black cohosh extract (e.g. “Remifemin”). Studies show: the earlier it is started after the onset of the first symptoms, the greater the effect. After 2 to 4 weeks of treatment there is already an initial improvement. The therapy can be continued for years. Homeopathic therapy is also possible.
