One of the reasons that many children are overweight is an unhealthy diet. A uniform prevention program does not seem to make sense. Because, according to an international study, children’s tastes vary from country to country.
More and more children are overweight. In addition to a lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet is also responsible. Because children have a preference for unhealthy food. A current study by the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology in Bremen shows that there can be no uniform recommendation on how children should eat. The scientists working with Wolfgang Ahrens, together with other European researchers, examined the taste of 1,700 children between the ages of six and nine years. In addition to Germany, Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Hungary and Cyprus were also involved in the study. The results showed clear differences in the children’s taste preferences. While German children especially liked to drink unsweetened apple juice, the study participants from Italy, Sweden and Hungary preferred sweetened drinks with aromatic substances. On the other hand, German children taste much better biscuits with a high fat content than their peers in other countries: 70 percent of the German test subjects preferred the fatty biscuits, in Cyprus, however, only 35 percent of the study participants liked to eat them. “Taste preferences differ from country to country; a uniform prevention program for better nutrition would therefore not be equally effective in all countries ”, Anne Lanfer, one of the participating researchers, sums up the study results. In order to introduce children to a healthy diet, nutritional suggestions must therefore be developed that are based on regional preferences. Only then can children lose weight healthily and enjoy their food at the same time.
