Prepare stocks: chocolate may run out

Of all the rumors in the world, this is the worst. Worst of all, it’s not even a rumor. According to the biggest manufacturers in the world, including Barry Callebaut, the source of happiness in the form of food has its days numbered. The reason? Excessive consumption. And when I say that the end of the world is near, nobody believes. Sorry for the emotion. This post was written in the heat of the moment, as soon as I read the news – it was right at the time of hunger, the one that takes place before bed. Voltage level 1000.
Anyway, it just so happens that just last year, our world consumed more or less “70 thousand metric tons of cocoa in addition to the volume produced” (Estadão). I have no idea how much it is, but apparently it is not a small thing. Calm that we have not yet reached the worst part. According to Callebout and Mars, Inc, in the next five years the forecast is that this negative figure could reach 2 million metric tons.
The main reason for the chocolate crisis is the lack of cocoa. West African countries are the largest cocoa producers in the world (they supply around 70% to all continents) and drought has greatly affected production. Not to mention the pests and the work it takes to have a hyper cocoa farm, which has caused many farmers to change their plantations to more profitable foods, such as corn.
Then the story reaches you, me, the neighbor and co: we are eating too much chocolate. The demand is so great that not even the plants have so much desire for cocoa, my people. Then you come to me and say: “Ok, Marina, beauty. The most that will happen is that the chocolate will become more expensive, but obviously it will not end! ”. OK! The thing is that since 2012 brands have been raising prices – the high has exceeded 60% !. It may happen that chocolate is available at a gold price, yes. But it can also happen that he undergoes a “laboratory mutation” to last until the end of our days. “There are ongoing attempts to make chocolate cheap and plentiful – and in the process, the candy ends up being as tasteless as the tomatoes bought in today’s stores.” In other words, it seems that in a while we will eat something pounded with sugar, with a color that remembers from a distance the bright brown of a 100% cocoa syrup. They will sell us saying that it is chocolate!

The way is to wait, hope that the Earth becomes abundant and spacious to hold tons of cocoa trees and, of course, prepare the stock. (source: Estadão).
PS: Hi, I’m here again a week after I published this post. According to a Veja SP article, Barry Callebaut’s producers have not confirmed that huge data regarding the shortage of chocolate. Production will be a little lower, of course, but nothing so alarming, according to them. Check the report here.
What do you think will happen?
