Years ago pasta, bread & Co. fell into disrepute – wrongly, as US researchers have now discovered! According to one study, a balanced percentage of carbohydrates is not only important, it actually increases the chances that we will live longer.
Trendy diets such as low-carb or high-fat have fundamentally changed our image of carbohydrates. The forms of nutrition are more popular than ever – because they guarantee quick weight loss. However, it is dearly paid for, as scientists have now found out in a study that was published in the journal “The Lancet”.
Too few carbohydrates increase the risk of death
Over a period of 25 years, the scientists accompanied almost 15,500 adults between the ages of 45 and 64. The participants were examined before the start of the study and were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their eating behavior before and after six years.
The research team also considered other factors such as demographic , level of education, income, physical activity, health restrictions and tobacco consumption. It turned out that those who covered their daily calorie intake with less than 30 percent carbohydrates had a 20 percent higher risk of death!

The researchers recommend that
If 50-year-old participants covered 50 to 55 percent of their energy intake from carbohydrates, they could still look forward to 33 years of life. Vegetarians are the exception
Vegetarians took a special form within the study: they were able to reduce their risk of death by 18 percent even with few carbohydrates. A meat-based diet, on the other hand, increased this by 18 percent. The scientists suspect that animal fats promote inflammation within the body and thus accelerate biological aging through oxidative stress.
