Are products without sugar automatically healthy? The food industry likes to make us believe that we are doing something good for our body with zero-sugar products. Unfortunately, this calculation does not work out … In many foods there are ingredients that are far more worrying. From preservatives to corn syrup – we’ll show you which additives you should rather avoid!

Sugar is one of the ingredients with the worst reputation, and products with no added sugar are springing up like mushrooms. It is supposed to make us slow, fat and sick. Many brands and supermarkets are jumping on the health bandwagon, reducing sugar in their food and promoting low-sugar products. That is not a bad thing in and of itself – unfortunately it is forgotten that there are far more questionable ingredients in our food besides sugar, for example all sugar alternatives. In the following gallery we explain which ingredients you should avoid and why.

1. Preservatives: Preservatives are harmful – this is now well known. But why actually? As the name suggests, they ensure a longer shelf life for food. In this way they prevent the growth of bacteria, molds and yeasts. As you can imagine, this doesn’t work without chemistry. Sulfur dioxide is a frequently used substance that helps keep dried fruits and ready meals. However, its consumption can lead to headaches, nausea, and diarrhea. It is therefore advisable to avoid highly processed foods as much as possible. It is well known that fresh cooking is always the best solution – you know what’s in it!

2. Hydrogenated fats: The so-called trans fats are created when fats are heated up. Above all, it is about the combination of carbohydrates, oil and very hot temperatures. This is how fatty acids are chemically transformed into trans fats. Trans fats have a serious influence on cholesterol levels and lead to a higher risk of diabetes. They also significantly increase the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. They can be found in many processed foods such as chips, ready meals and fast food, but unfortunately also in our beloved croissants and puff pastry.

3. Sugar variants and flavor enhancers: Sugar substitutes are not automatically better than conventional sugar. The artificial sugar alternatives do not contain carbohydrates, which is why they are often used in low-carb foods and light products. However, it is questionable whether these substitutes are harmless to health. In larger quantities they can have a laxative effect and rumors of a carcinogenic effect persist. The culprits are fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose and glucose syrup. You should avoid these ingredients in the future. In general: every sugar promotes obesity and diabetes and should only be consumed in moderation!

4. Glucose-fructose syrup: Glucose-fructose syrup, also called corn syrup, is the cheaper little brother of sugar. It is made from corn starch and due to its liquid consistency it is mainly used in soft drinks, ice cream or yoghurt. What sounds so innocent is pretty sneaky: Corn syrup causes food cravings and upsets insulin levels. Long-term consumption threatens diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

5. Zero-sugar products: Unfortunately, the beloved zero-sugar products are not as innocent as they look. The latest studies show that long-term consumption of these foods in particular can lead to diabetes and the so-called metabolic syndrome (abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, lipid metabolism disorders and insulin resistance) and obesity. They actually have fewer calories than conventional sugar, but the artificial taste that the light products leave behind ensures that our body craves more sweets. A vicious circle that is difficult to escape from.
