As most of you already know, the basis of several typical Portuguese dishes is made with red meat or fish and seafood. For this reason, vegetarians and vegans have a slightly greater difficulty in finding good restaurants. Not all places in Porto have meatless options on the menu, hindering the experience of those who visit the city and have a more restricted diet.
To help everyone who has this kind of difficulty, like me, I made a list with some of the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Porto. Some of them also have meat dishes, a good option for those with another company. In addition, they are all great alternatives for those who want to eat healthier during the trip. That way, everyone eats well 😉
In Live Meat
Em Carne Viva’s decor and food are simply incredible. The atmosphere is super charming and with a very classic style. The colors are more neutral, making the place even more cute. All this romantic atmosphere is also present in the menu served by the house.
The dishes are inspired by regional cuisine, using the ingredients in a very creative way. One of the most interesting dishes is the “thousand leaves” of vegetables, prepared with carrots, Italian zucchini, red pepper and cream and cheese flavored with curry. Just imagining it already feels like a delight!
For those who want a wonderful breakfast or a lighter lunch, just go to Época Porto. As suggested by the name of the place, they only work with seasonal ingredients. In other words, everything is very fresh and harvested according to the season. The menu usually changes daily, but some dishes are often repeated.
Spiced lentil and tomato soup and gluten-free rice noodles with vegetables are two dishes that are always coming back to the menu. In the case of breakfast, the pancakes and the bowl with various fruits are two of the most delicious options.
Two flavors culture
One of the most charming restaurants on the list is Cultura dos Sabores. Despite having a simpler decor, his environment is super cozy. A small part of it has a counter with a few rocking chairs, making a simple meal a more playful experience, you know?
It works as a buffet, so you can assemble the dish the way you prefer. I confess that I do not always think this type of restaurant is very good, since some foods end up losing a little taste if they are exposed for a long time. Still, it is a good place for those who want a quick and delicious meal.
Another restaurant with creative and interesting dishes is Essência. Their focus is on vegetarian and vegan cooking, but they usually have between two to four options for meat eaters. In the case of the veg menu, the options are super varied and they vary regularly.
Among the dishes they usually serve are asparagus risotto with fennel, Thai vegetable curry and spinach and tofu ravioli in saffron marinade with tomato sauce. The spices and spices make each ingredient even more special, it is worth visiting the place!
From the earth
DaTerra is almost always on the list of favorite restaurants for vegetarians and vegans living in Porto. One of his advantages is that he has two units spread across the city, one on Rua Afonso Cordeiro and another on Rua Mouzinho da Silveira. The food is delicious and praised by practically everyone who tastes it.
The ingredients are almost all organic and few of them come from animals. They also work with the buffet scheme, that is, you choose what you want and assemble the dish the way you like it. Some of the options are eggplant with cashew paste and sun-dried tomatoes, tofu with pesto mango and various types of pie for dessert.
With a very simple and cute decoration, the Macrobiotic surprises with the different flavors and textures in the dishes. The menu is almost all vegan and all dishes are super healthy. Chef Raquel Rocha tries her best to provide customers with a natural and sustainable cuisine, using seasonal and organic products.
The soups in the restaurant are always highly praised, and each day they offer a different one. Vegetables are the most used elements to compose the dishes and they are always very fresh and chosen from producers who are careful with the food!
Although not a strictly vegetarian or vegan place, the Diplomat has great meatless dishes or products of animal origin. Pancakes and açaí bowls are special, full of flavor and with very different and delicious combinations.
They have a special brunch menu, and all portions are served with pancakes. You can choose from the side dishes, which are usually scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms or açaí. The salads and toast are also incredible, like the rustic bread toast with eggplant, goat cheese and wild fruit compote.
Another super charming coffee to the list! Casinha has a very modern style and is ideal for those who want to eat something simpler or just a snack, you know? The local salads and quiches are highly praised. In addition, most people who frequent coffee often ask for delicious smoothies.
They also sell meat dishes, such as pancakes stuffed with chicken. However, almost all dishes have a meatless version. In this case, for example, they offer a pancake with cheese and tomatoes! Soups and hot drinks are great options for colder days.
Porto is full of delicious places to eat, right? Each corner has a differential and all dishes are prepared with great care. If you are also in doubt about which tours to take, take a look at the tips I gave in another post here on the site!
