For Ashley Gearhardt, a researcher at the University of Michigan, the crazy desire for chocolate arises in the same region of the brain that influences addiction to heavier substances, let’s say. The way of consumption is that it can be beneficial or not to the body. The cocoa powder present in recipes, for example, acts with the benefits of a functional food – it is rich in antioxidants and flavonoids. On the other hand, inhaling the powder may not be such an interesting idea: Doctor Jordan Josephson, from Lenox Hill Hospital (NY), explained in an interview with LiveScience that when sniffing cocoa, the nose can recognize the much-loved ingredient as something harmful to body. That is, better to keep cocoa only in hot chocolate, okay?
Even against medical suggestions, there are people who like to live in danger. It is the case of Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone, who has worked alongside great chefs such as Heston Blumenthal and Ferran Adriá. Persoone improvised a device that works with a trigger that fires powdered chocolate right into the nostrils – the mixture has ingredients like ginger and raspberry. The idea came up for a band party Rolling Stones, in 2007, and was successful. Over the course of seven years, the chocolatier sold 25 thousand units of the chocolate catapult kit.
The “Chocolate shooter” kit includes the utensil and two more boxes of powdered chocolate, one with ginger and one with raspberry.
