Do you know those places that you think are wonderful, despite having a hard time? Death Valley is like that! It is considered one of the hottest places in the world and is also very dry.
I had never seen such a deserted place in my life, but the trip was well worth it. I have listed some very important tips for you to have no problems during the tour 🙂
How to get
Car is the best option for the trip to Death Valley. The distance between Las Vegas and the Valley, for example, is 230 km. But, if you think you’ll be able to use your phone on the way and see the way through GPS, you’re totally wrong! Telephone coverage on the way is virtually non-existent, so bring a map and study the route well before leaving.
Choose the car you are going to use well, because the best option is one that has air conditioning. Don’t give it up because the heat is so intense. Also keep an eye on the amount of gas stored so you don’t have any problems along the way. The road may seem endless, but the landscapes at the end of it reward everything!
When to go
Paulo and I went there in July and the heat was stifling. In addition to the strong sun, the climate is very dry. Even though I was prepared, I felt sick and my nose bled several times! January and December are the winter months in the Death Valley and it is the busiest time there, as the heat is not extreme. It is a good option for those who do not feel well in the heat.
If you go in the warmer months, be prepared to withstand very high temperatures. For you to have an idea, in July the average is 40ºC.
It is no joke when they tell you to be very careful when visiting Death Valley. It may seem like mother’s advice, but pay attention to all the tips to avoid any bad surprises.
Drink plenty of water, eat well (especially before going to the sights), put on sunscreen, wear comfortable clothes and try to go as early as possible – so the heat is not so strong. Nobody likes to be sick, right? So respect your limit and do not exercise in that heat, because the result may not be good.
Where to stay
We stayed at The Inn, which is located in a hotel complex within the Furnace Creek Ranch. We took advantage of the accommodation to get some heat and rest.
In addition to the hotels, the place functions as a visitor center and, for me, it is a mandatory stop, not least because you need to go somewhere to eat and relax before going to the sights.
And it was in this place that the highest temperature ever recorded in the world was set! On July 10, 1913, the thermometer reached 56.7ºC. If I already found the 40ºC I felt extremely hot, I don’t even like to imagine what it was like that day!
The first place we visited after Furnace Creek was Zabriskie Point, and the landscape is surreal. We stayed there to watch the sunrise and, even though it is very early, the heat is very strong. The place has no trees, it is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my life!
We also went to Badwater, and this place has a white floor because it is covered with salt. It is 86 meters below sea level and is one of the most famous places in the Death Valley! Paulo and I walked 20 minutes to a part of him to take some pictures, but soon we left because of the heat.
We came back even faster than we did because I started to feel sick and had to stay in the car until I felt better. As I already said, the heat is challenging, so be very careful, okay?
Artiste Pallete is a volcanic formation that created a mountain range, composed of ash and minerals. Because of the heat and rain these elements have changed color, so it has pink, bluish and also lilac tones. It’s the most beautiful thing in the world, I swear! It really looks like an artist went over there and painted the mountains.
We thought that during the sunset the place would be even more beautiful, but the orange tone inhibited the colors a little, so I recommend you to go early or after dusk 😉
The Natural Bridge is basically a bridge-shaped rock. To get there it is necessary to make a small trail that is around 1.6 km. The walk is very easy and the path is full of rock formations and at the end of the trail there is a dry waterfall.
Oh, don’t forget to avoid the afternoon to go to those places, huh? Plan well because the heat gets even worse during that time of day!
For you to better understand how beautiful the place is, just watch our vlogs! The heat was very complicated, but the Death Valley is surprising and really worth visiting.
