Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world and is well known for its romantic atmosphere, the Eiffel Tower and its museums and art galleries. I think it’s impossible that you haven’t seen at least one romantic comedy that has Paris as a backdrop! Just by the movies we have already got an idea of the countless tour options and incredible places to visit.
I am completely in love with the city not only for its beauty, but also because it is full of special places and many restaurants with delicious food. I will share with you some important tips for you to enjoy the city and have an incredible experience there, as well as the ones I had 🙂
Basic French expressions
We love it when we see gringos trying to speak Portuguese, right? The same thing happens to them in relation to us. In addition to being more sympathetic for trying to speak another language, knowing a few things facilitates communication and can help you escape from very embarrassing situations. Some important expressions in French are “bonjour” (good morning and good afternoon), “bonsoir” (good night), “merci” (thank you), “au revoir” (bye), “s’il vous plaît” (please ) and “comment ça va?” (all right?). Don’t forget to practice pronunciation, okay?
Bouquinists are stands located along the banks of the River Seine and occupy about 3 km. The trade is specialized in rare and used books, in addition to newspapers and postcards, mostly old ones. As the number of tourists has increased, booksellers started selling many souvenirs, taking away the essence of the place. If you have the opportunity to go to Paris soon, do not waste time and go visit traditional bouquinists while they are still there!
Fairground Arts Museum
The museum is charming and makes adult visitors return to their childhood while observing and interacting with the collection of spectacle objects and amusement parks from the 19th and 20th centuries. To enter is very simple: just make a reservation beforehand, so don’t forget to program.
Whenever we travel we are a little lost in relation to the transportation of the place, mainly because we do not know how it works and which are the best routes! The Paris Metro Map app makes your life a lot easier, helping you find the location of the stations and also offering route options. The download is free, available for IOS and Android, and to use it you need to be connected to the internet.
In this neighborhood is located the Sacré Cœur Basilica, and its base is on top of a hill, providing a view of Paris from above. The view from the place is incredible and, for those who do not want to wait for long lines and expensive prices to reach the top of the Eiffel Tower, the place is ideal. I recommend you to go there during the sunset, because the landscape is even more beautiful and exciting.
Water in restaurants
It is common in Paris to ask for tap water in restaurants so as not to have to pay for bottles, which are usually very expensive. If you want to save money with this, just ask the waiter for water using the expression “une carafe d’eau”. Just don’t be ashamed and take the opportunity to train French 😉
August is the month of holidays for the French and therefore several establishments are closed. Try to schedule your trip for a month other than August, so you will get to know even more places and there is no risk of going there and finding several shops and restaurants locked up!
Buttes de Chaumont park has a huge green area and is one of the best places to have a picnic, including the traditional towel spread on the grass and various snacks. Some parks prohibit stepping on the grass, so keep an eye out for those who give you permission.
The neighborhood is frequented by many young people and has a huge variety of cafes, bars, shops, art galleries and bookstores. The visit is very pleasant and there are stops for all tastes. One of my favorite stores in this place is called Profiterole Chérie and has some of the most delicious profiteroles in the world. The candy is delicious and they assemble according to the customer’s preference, I highly recommend it!
The most famous sights in Paris are clichés for a reason: they are wonderful and charming. For a complete trip, you must visit the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Avenue Champs-Elysées, Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral, Luxembourg Gardens and Versailles. Aah, also set aside many hours to walk and enjoy the Louvre Museum.
