What you need to know before you go to San Francisco

Everyone who knows San Francisco falls in love with the city, even with all the fog that covers it almost the entire year. The city is charming and even this fog and the cold make the environment charming, you know? Paulo and I unfortunately only spent two days there and we wished we had a lot more time to get to know the place.
I recommend that you spend at least a week in the city, so it is possible to do things without haste and get to know even more places. I will tell you what is important to know before you travel there and also give you several tips on where to eat and what places to visit 😉

Paulo and I stayed in a beautiful city called Sausalito, which is opposite San Francisco. The two places are connected by the Golden Gate and Sausalito is worth a visit as much as SF. The hotel that accommodated us was Cavallo Point, and I just loved it. We were lucky to stay in one of the rooms that overlooks the Golden Gate, so I immediately fell in love with the place. In addition to the super cozy accommodation, the breakfast is great and has numerous food options.
If you prefer to stay in San Francisco, one of the best regions there is Union Square. It is right in the city center and makes getting around to other neighborhoods a lot easier, especially if you are going to walk there only with public transport or taxi and uber. Good hotel options in the region are the Marriott and the Four Seasons!

When to go

As I mentioned above, the city is cloudy most of the time. There are many drafts in the region, so the climate is milder. Even if you go in the summer, always bring a cardigan, especially at night.
If you want to avoid the cold, don’t go between December and February. The winter is not so severe in the region, the minimum is around 7º C, but the wind is very cold and it rains a lot. In the other months of the year, the temperatures are very pleasant and great for any type of city tour.

Getting around the city

San Francisco is not a very big city and you can do most tours using public transportation or using a transportation app when needed. One of the biggest “problems” there is the very steep streets. It gets very tiring, especially if you have been walking for a long time.
Renting a car is a great option and, in my opinion, one of the best, because it is much more comfortable and comfortable. I already made a post here on the website about how to rent a car abroad, take a look at it. Ah, even if you use the car to get around there, be sure to ride the Cable Car. He’s a super cute cable car and looks like he came out of an old movie. That was one of the things I was most excited to do there and I loved the experience.

Restaurants and Cafes

One of the most traditional places in San Francisco is Boudin Bakery, located at Fisherman’s Wharf. There they sell a huge variety of breads and you can eat them with a soup also made by the house. It is delicious and the soup can be taken home in small jars.
Another very touristy place is Mr. Holmes Bakehouse. The bakery has the style of the city and is widely photographed because of its neon pink sign written “I Got Baked In San Francisco”. It is impossible to leave without a photo in that corner. Ah, there you should try the Cruffin, which is nothing more than a croissant baked in the shape of a muffin and stuffed with some cream or jam you have on the day.
To eat a wonderful dessert you must go to Ghirardelli Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop. They sell a delicious sundae called Hot Fudge and, although it looks very sweet, it is balanced. This sundae is huge and the bowl can be divided into up to 4 people!

Regarding restaurants, I will mention three vegetarian places with incredible dishes, even for those who eat meat. The first of them is the Nourish Cafe, which has several options for salads, sandwiches, toast and smoothies. The place is perfect for those who want to have breakfast or a refreshing afternoon snack. Another place worth going to, especially if you love hamburgers, is VeganBurg. In addition to the environment being a grace, they have great options for snacks rich in some type of vitamin or protein.
Last but not least, the Greens Restaurant. In addition to the menu having options for all meals of the day, you will find dishes with a touch of originality, such as a Mexican vegetable ragout seasoned with herbs and pepper. The bonus of this place is the wonderful view of the bay of San Francisco.

Victorian houses

Another well-known tourist spot in the city is the Victorian houses on Alamo Square. They were built between 1892 and 1896 and their structure is cute – not to mention the colors, right?
It is a very interesting tour, especially if you like architecture. The Victorian-style houses that still exist in San Francisco survived the 1906 earthquake. In other words, besides being beautiful, they are full of stories. They are so charming that they even became sets for films and series, such as Full House and The Bicentennial Man.

Other places to visit

San Francisco is full of famous sights, but the best known to everyone is the Golden Gate. You can see it in some parts of the city, but one of the coolest ways to see the bridge is by crossing a bicycle. The ride is fun and different, as well as giving you a perspective on what it’s like to be inside the bridge – and outside a car.
If you want to see the bridge from a distance and still in a beautiful place, just go to Baker Beach. You take the time to see the Golden Gate and also enjoy the beach a little. Ah, this beach is known for being nudist, that is, do not be alarmed by what you will see there.
Those who enjoy sightseeing can not leave San Francisco without having visited Dolores Park. It is usually quite crowded, but provides wonderful views of the city. In addition to it, Lombard Street also deserves a quick visit. The street is extremely winding and full of flowers, it is beautiful to see. And if you, like Paulo and I, enjoy views and landscapes, you should go to the Twin Peaks or the Coit Tower to have a panoramic view of San Francisco.

You can also make a day trip to the island of Alcatraz, which is beautiful and also full of history. At the top of the island, there was a prison, currently open to visitors. The tours there are all guided and it is super worth going! Ah, besides Alcatraz, go to Pier 39 if you have time. The place is crowded most of the time, mainly because the region is full of sea lions! In addition, location tin various shops and amusement park toys – an excellent alternative for those traveling with children.
